Practical Uses of Two Way Radios
There are many practical and fun ways to use two way radios. On family outings, two way radios are great for keeping tack of family members in shopping malls, at amusement parks, in the nature preserve or anywhere else family members can get separated. The two way radio is also a great way to keep your family members safe if they do get separated -- one call: "Mom, dad, I need help!" will get mom and dad to the scene real fast. Another family use of two way radios is to keep in touch with each other if you ever make a road trip and use two or more vehicles -- the lead car can warn the others of any traffic problems or road hazards. Many two way radios can communicate up to eight miles away from each other and some up to 14 miles, which is more than enough for most family outing situations.
On hunting or fishing trips the guys and girls can sometimes get unintentionally separated or lost in the woods -- or get in trouble -- or find a great fishing spot; two way radios are just the perfect answer in all these situations too.
There are several major manufacturers of two way radios and a great variety of features available such as hands-free voice activation and vibrate settings for places and situations where you don't want to use an audible alarm voice. Some two way radios only operate at short distances (less than two miles) and some, as indicated before, will give you a range of up to 14 miles. The range, however, is always controlled by the type of terrain (hills, structures, etc.) and the weather conditions. Speaking of weather conditions, some two way radios now feature NOAA weather channels to keep you informed about approaching (or departing) storms.
Some two way radios operate on AA or AAA batteries and many have NiCad rechargeable batteries. The rechargeable versions either have a battery pack that can be removed from the radio and charged while you have your extra battery pack in use in the radio or they feature a recharging base where you put the entire radio to allow it to charge up; car chargers are now also available for some two way radios. Another feature of two way radios with rechargeable batteries is that they can be used with conventional batteries while your rechargeable batteries are charging up.
There are a great variety of accessories available for two way radios: headsets, earplug receivers and throat microphones are some of the most popular of these accessories.
