AudioVox Walkie Talkies: 2 Mile Radios

If you want a very good walkie talkie for family and casual use at a price that seems reasonable for a recreational walkie talkie, look into the AudioVox walkie talkies.

The AudioVox line of walkie talkies operate on the Family Radio Service (FRS) frequency and give you, like all FRS radios, a 2 mile range of communications. The 2 miles is, of course, dependent on the terrain and the structures between you and whoever you are talking to but in most situations you will get very close to two miles.

AudioVox walkie talkies give you 14 channels and a feature they call "auto channel scan" that allows the walkie talkie to eliminate most interference from other radios -- even when you are using it in a place where lots of other walkie talkies are in use. AudioVox gives you a good-sized red LED display and other really nice features like VOX (voice activation or, to use the more popular phrase, hands-free operation); it seems like you should expect VOX from AudioVox and you get it! There is also a power save function that will give you extended life from your four AAA batteries (not generally included with your purchase).

The size of the AudioVox walkie talkies is really perfect -- with the rubberized antenna folded down flush with the unit, the walkie talkie will fit in a shirt pocket or slip easily into your fannie pack. AudioVox also provides you with a jack where you can plug in an earphone or a headset -- it's a standard size so it will accept most headsets or earphones. Along with a PTT (Push-To-Talk) button on the side of the radio you have a "Call" button that allows you to "ring" a walkie talkie on the same channel and a monitor button which gives you an open channel so that you can hear what everyone on the channel is saying -- provided they are also using the monitor feature.

AudioVox walkie talkies are compatible with all of the other FRS walkie talkies made by other companies but AudioVox models do not support privacy codes used by some of the pricier, high-end radios.

Here is a list of the main features available on AudioVox walkie talkies:

14 FRS channels
Electronic tuning
Compatible with other FRS radios
Transmits up to 2 miles (with no obstructions)
Built-in VOX (voice activation)
Electronic channel/volume control
Earphone jack
Swivel belt clip

Call button

Note that AudioVox walkie talkies that operate on the FRS band do NOT require FCC licensing.
