Kenwood Two Way Radios: The FreeTalk Line
Kenwood is a leading manufacturer of high-end, high-quality FRS and GMRS band radios. These Kenwood two way radios for the consumer market are sold under the name "FreeTalk" and are a product line of consumer two way radios that are excellent, rugged and dependable radios for all users and for all uses.
The FreeTalk FRS radio is the UBZ-LH14. This radio features a rugged construction and the great audio quality one would expect from the Kenwood brand. Like all FRS radios the communication range of the UBZ-LH14 is 'up to two miles' (which, of course, depends upon terrain and structures that might interfere with radio transmission).
The UBZ-LH14 radio features:
* An easy-to-use menu for setting up the radio's features.
* A large LCD display
* A swivel, fold down antenna
* A belt clip
* 14 channels with 532 channel combinations.
One of the two FreeTalk GMRS radios is the FreeTalk XLS (TK-3131). This compact and lightweight two way radio is packed with features found only in a high-end product. This radio has an optimum range of four miles.
The TK-3131 radio features:
* 15 channels with 121 sub-channels
* A rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride battery
* A rapid desktop charger
A second Kenwood GMRS radio is the more powerful, FreeTalk XL (TK-3101). Designed specifically for outdoor use, they call this the "Adventure Radio" and it is tough enough to meet military standards for durability and ruggedness.
The TK-3101 radio features:
* Fifteen channels and 38 talk groups. The first 7 channels are also compatible with the first 7 channels of FRS radios.
* An optimum five-mile range
* A die-cast aluminum frame and polycarbonate case
* A rechargeable battery and desktop charger
NOTE: The FCC regulates two way radios that operate on the GMRS band and requires users of this type of radio to obtain a license and pay a fee. The GMRS license is good for five years and costs $80.00; the license must be obtained by an adult (the radios operating under the license may be used by minors but only with the licensed adult's knowledge and permission). Go to the FCC's Internet page at:

for more information on GMRS licensing.
Kenwood two way radios that operate on the GMRS band will require the purchase of this FCC license.
