Midland 2 Way Radios: GMRS Radios for Consumer Use

Midland Radio Corporation is an experienced and leading manufacturer of wireless two-way and weather/hazard alert radios. Midland has been manufacturing quality communications equipment in the United States for the past 50 years. Midland is currently marketing a line of eleven GMRS radios for the consumer market; four families of two way radios: that allow communication up to a ranges of eight miles, ten miles, twelve miles and fourteen miles.

There are two Midland 2 way radios marketed for use in the eight-mile range: the LXT 210 and the LXT 210VP. These are the most affordable and are great for family situations that involve shopping malls, amusement parks, camping trips or bicycle excursions. Both radios offer 22 channels -- the VP model includes rechargeable batteries and a charger unit.

There are three Midland 2 way radios marketed for use in the ten-mile range: the LXT 310, the LXT 310VP, and the LXT 350VP. These more powerful (3 watt) radios come standard with the VOX feature (voice activation) and privacy codes that virtually extend the 22 available channels. The VP models includes rechargeable batteries and a charger unit. The LXT 350VP has a special camouflage face plate.

There are two Midland 2 way radios marketed for use in the twelve-mile range: the LXT 410 and the LXT 410VP3. These increased range radios come standard with NOAA weather radio and vibration (instead of audible) notification. The VP3 also includes two rechargeable battery packs, two belt clips, one AC adapter and one dual desk charger.

There are four Midland 2 way radios marketed for use in the fourteen-mile range: the GTX500, the GXT550VP1, the GXT500VP4 and the GXT550VP4. These five-watt radios are the most powerful two way radios allowed by the FCC for GMRS use. These are all 22 channel radios with all of the features offered by the LXT 400-series radios. The VP1 model comes standard with a pair of headsets, the VP4 models come standard with rechargeable batteries, a battery charger and headsets.

NOTE: The FCC regulates two way radios that operate on the GMRS band and requires users of this type of radio to obtain a license and pay a fee. The GMRS license is good for five years and costs $80.00; the license must be obtained by an adult (the radios operating under the license may be used by minors but only with the licensed adult's knowledge and permission).
