Motorola Two Way Radios: The TalkAbout Series
Since the FCC created the Family Radio Service (FRS) band for short distance communications in 1996, Motorola two way radios have been considered to be the best in the eyes of the consumers because of the clarity of their reception, the range of their operation and their features. Motorola's family of TalkAbout radios offer both FRS operation and GMRS operation.
The Family Radio Service (FRS) band gives you the ability to communicate between radios that are physically up to two-miles apart (this distance may be less, depending on the terrain and weather conditions). The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) band extends the range of communications beyond 2 miles!
The FCC regulates two way radios that operate on the GMRS band and requires users of this type of radio to obtain a license and pay a fee. The GMRS license is good for five years and costs $80.00; the license must be obtained by an adult (the radios operating under the license may be used by minors but only with the licensed adult's knowledge and permission). Go to the FCC's Internet page at:

for more information on GMRS licensing.
There are five models in the TalkAbout family of Motorola two way radios; they all have 22 channel capability (7 GMRS/FRS 1-watt channels, 7 FRS 0.5-watt channels and 8 GMRS 1-watt channels).
The least expensive TalkAbout model is the T4500. The T4500 model is a very compact size (just 4.5 inches tall and less than two inches wide). Like all the TalkAbouts, there is an audible tone when the PTT (push-to-talk) button is pushed and another when it is released; the radios all also have low battery alerts. The T4500 has a two-mile range of operation.
The TalkAbout T5720 Model has a five-mile range of operation and adds voice activation, a variety of audible tones, and the ability to automatically pick out the clearest channel available to the T4500's features.
The T5820 model TalkAbout is has all the features of the T5720 plus a vibrate setting for use in places when you don't want (or can't hear) an audible tone and also a keyboard locking capability.
The TalkAbout T6500 offers all the features of the T5820 plus noise filtering to filter out static and effectively extend the range of the radio and improve the quality of the transmission. The T6500 also features 8 NOAA weather channels.
The Motorola T7400R offers all the features of the T6500 but extends the range of operation to 8 miles with its 2 watt power output.
The TalkAbout family of Motorola two way radios are priced very reasonably and many of the models offer a 1-year warrantee.
